HKMA Coin Collection Programme

An instantly recognisable box truck has been repurposed for a unusual free service provided by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority: to collect unused coins from the public. Weight, power supply, and security protocols are observed; the truck’s compact air-conditioned customer area and secure cash handling areas are separated by bulletproof glass, and the customer area is accessible to wheelchairs by lift, and by two sets of embedded, retractable stairs. Coins are counted and deposited at a manned counter, and exchanged for banknotes, topping up Octopus stored value payment cards, or donations to charity for the same amount.
