The Stairwell, Hong Kong City Hall High Block

Aesthetics of ascend/descend

Since 1962, the Hong Kong City Hall has linked culture and the arts to everyday life.

I’ve been going up and down these stairs since I was a child. They connect the marriage registry, public libraries and exhibition hall… and the stairwell is backdropped by a wall of glass windows overlooking Victoria Harbour and the central business district. The stairs bring people to knowledge, culture and the arts, and the city to ideas.

The modernist space features clean lines and minimalist aesthetics which were ahead of their time and, even today, it is a divine work which shelters six decades of Hong Kong’s collective memory and sentiments.
