The workshop will build on the HKIDA’s experience of Tai-O Cultural Festival, a pilot scheme for the Characteristic Local Tourism by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, which addresses key principles to ensure the sustainability of cultural heritage while also finding a balance between local communities and tourists.

Workshop participants will explore the value of local tourism promotion to cultural heritage and how interior and social design can be effectively used to build Hong Kong’s local characteristics.

1/100 Academy was established by a local architectural design firm Knock Knock Ideas. They believe the right to seek for good space design belongs to all of us, not just architects. For the sake of healthy development of our city, we need to learn how to observe like a designer, from the smallest details to the biggest monuments. And more importantly, to convert these observations into imaginations and thoughts. By introducing basic architectural design concepts and processes of thinking, the group wishes to inspire more people from different backgrounds to shift from “a user” to “a design team member”. Together we should be a team that construct genuine “spaces for people”.

This workshop will discuss about the concept of “scale conversion”. Participants will be given materials to disassemble daily use objects, and reassemble them in a creative way with addition of accessories to become an interesting interior / exterior space.

Ken Chow is a largely self-taught woodworker. Having chosen to devote his whole life to carpentry and to perfect his craft through experimentation and innovation, after many apprenticeships he founded Yat Muk Studio to practise, research and teach woodwork full-time.

In this hands-on workshop, let us explore different types and functions of Chinese woodworking tools such as planes, drills and chisels, and keeping the traditional Chinese Carpentry and Craftsmanship alive in Hong Kong. Each participant will make a piece of Walnut coaster as a souvenir.

The Coffee Grounds Ornament Planting Workshop is driven by the “Zero Grounds Coffee Campaign”. During the workshop, participants can learn and experience the properties, usage and recycling mechanism or coffee grounds together with the basic composting principles. The compost and planting pots arranged are all upcycled from coffee grounds locally recycled in Hong Kong. Each participant will finish 2 pots of ornament plants. With the natural color and texture of the coffee grounds, the pots serve as a perfect additive to the home furnishing.

Sketching is a very popular way designers use to train their perception to object and space. In this workshop, participants will experience whole new ways to do sketching. Playful elements such as competition and creativity will also be embedded in this workshop, which gives you a boost of imaginative and discerning mind.
