Hong Kong Reader Bookstore

An urban oasis

Writer and editor Wong Yi loves to spend her afternoons at the Hong Kong Reader, an independent academic bookstore that carries new and second-hand humanities and social science titles. Located on the seventh floor of an old building above the hustle and bustle of Mongkok market, the peaceful bookstore offers a large, comfortable, orange couch and a few tables and chairs by the window. There are often students doing their homework, or authors signing their books and chatting with readers. Weiwei the cat is the resident muse and rolls on the floor or sleeps on a bookshelf. After making her way through the busy, crowded streets, Wong knows she will always be greeted by a cat wanting to be petted, a relaxed, calm atmosphere, nice, interesting people, thought-provoking discussions and shelves of books to inspire her.
