A modern monument

Hung Keung is Associate Professor at the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts, The Education University of Hong Kong. As one of Hong Kong's most innovative pioneers in the field of new media art, it comes as no surprise that he likes the progressive sharp lines and unmistakable shape of Two International Finance Centre on the Central waterfront. Designed by renowned architect Cesar Pelli, it was a bold addition to Hong Kong’s skyline and, like an obelisk, the ultramodern skyscraper announces the importance of its occupants to the surrounding city. A monument to finance and trade, Two IFC seems to promote transactions and motion, and its offices, hotels, shops and entertainment facilities, as well as the train and MTR stations in the precinct, offer ordinary people myriad ways to use and enjoy it. For Hung, Two IFC is an ongoing, living negotiation between urban forms and functions.
